Singer-flutist Celia Wa unveils a bold and introspective debut album.
Her “karibfutursound” fuses traditional Gwoka rhythms with rich influences of soul, jazz, amapiano, and electronic music feat. Roger Raspail, with arrangements by David Walters.
In the ever-evolving musical universe, a voice emerges, carrying echoes of a rich past and the promises of a bold future. Célia Wa, the talented Guadeloupean artist, offers us "Fasadé," her debut album, a sonic odyssey transcending borders and eras.
The path to "Fasadé" was not without obstacles. Three EPs marked this journey, like a challenging expedition through the mountainous islands of the Caribbean. Yet, nothing could shake the determination of this artist driven by a powerful and unwavering Creole identity; indelible marks left in the collective memory of a people, told in Creole tales.
Even without fully mastering its nuances, Célia's interpretive strength, accompanied by her music and all that embellishes it, make the intention impossible to miss. You cannot help but be swept away by the emotions guiding each of the nine tracks. This energy transcends anger and the thirst for vengeance born from moments where life opened fault lines beneath her feet, from which she had to ascend, sometimes with difficulty.
However, from all this emerged an unyielding resilience. Guided by love, faith, and passion, she continues to move forward with assured steps. Ideas for tracks are born, foundations sketched, before gathering around those who have become a steadfast core for ten years: Xavier Belin's keyboards and Kristof Négrit's drums. Adding to the trio is David Walters, whom Célia accompanied on the concert circuit for a long time, contributing with his compositions and arrangements. Together, they create a sound that travels far beyond the Caribbean borders.
Infused with all that musically nourishes her Guadeloupe, her heart beating like a gwoka drum, invigorated by Roger Raspail's thunderous percussion, and rocked by Kingston's laid-back reggae, Celia surpasses the limits of the Caribbean arc alone. She braves an ocean of irreversible journeys to connect with Senegal and Ousmane Kouyaté's kora, and further east to Nigeria and Owomide's song. Reconnecting with common roots and pasts, blending differences into a formula that fosters natural exchange and mutual contribution.
Above all, music must liberate bodies and minds, even the most marked. It serves as an outlet for the darkest moments, leaving them far behind. And it makes us dance Welcome to the KARIBFUTURSOUND.

ANTHONY JOSEPH - ROWING UP RIVER TO GET OUR NAMES BACK - 2LP
Poet, novelist, musician and academic, Anthony Joseph teams up with legendary UK producer Dave Okumu for forthcoming album, ‘Rowing Up River To Get Our Names Back’
Dave Okumu, known perhaps best as frontman for The Invisible, though digging deeper into his production credits, huge names emerge such as; Grace Jones, Amy Winehouse, Jesse Ware, Rosie Lowe and Eska. On this album, the magic and alchemy of Dave’s production style showcase subtle sonics and deep layering resulting in a contemporary sound to carry Anthony’s afrofuturistic metrical
meanings.
Anthony and Dave first came across each other when working with Shabaka Hutchings during Covid broadcasts, and then after Anthony performed some poems on Dave’s 2023 album ‘I Came From Love’, the seeds of collaboration were sown. With a little more psychedelia, a little more experimentation, Dave’s eclectic vision focuses on the actual sounds on these pieces. Anthony stated that “The best producers guide you, not push you” now add to that the fact that both these humans were born on the same day, a concoction of laid back attitudes in people with strong purpose, some real magic can happen, naturally.
Early writing sessions for this record took place in 2022, around Mount Blanc in France. Anthony was away touring with long-time collaborator, Jason Yarde. Ideas were a little thin and they found themselves
somewhat repeating previous work resulting in Anthony rethinking things a little, and so entered Dave Okumu.
LP opener ‘Satellite’ is a fine example of how this new partnership pans out. New musicians have been enlisted; Dan See (Drums), Aviram Barath (Synths), Nick Ramm on Fender Rhodes and Byron Wallen (Trumpet). Add to that the mighty vocal power house of Eska and we have a whole new dimension of soul and depth, to carry Anthony’s statements. “You build a wall, we go under, you build it
higher, we go higher, like a satellite” . On the album's second single, ‘Tony’ - there’s a nod to all drummers and creators of African rhythms, from the point of view of Afrobeat legend Tony Allen. Highlighting this is drummer’s drummer Richard Spaven as Dave’s choice of skin beater. He successfully reminds us that Tony was someone who understood the real power of rhythm and how it is used to unite people.
As well as the new musicians on this LP, Dave Okumu played all the guitars and used the studio as his tool. On ‘A Juba for Janet’ - a poem to Joseph’s mother, and a track so bass heavy that it feels as though
it could sit in a deep dubstep set in Plastic People days, - Anthony’s voice reaches straight down your ear canals next to dark drums, huge synths and delayed saxophone stabs from Colin Webster. Slightly more introspective verses on ‘An Afrofuturist Poem’ see Dave’s beats show off the real future sound of
this record, kalimba, moog bass and guitars all played by the man himself.
Mellower and deeper moments are also present, Anthony’s cryptic yet informative storytelling is at its absolute best on ‘Churches Of Sound (The Benetiz-Rojo)’ - Caribbean and Windrush history reeled off alongside a linear musical timeline of Black music in the diaspora.
A reminder that this body of work is first of 2 volumes, ‘Rowing Up River To Get Our
Names Back’ is not a follow up to Anthony’s previous album, but more a development of his 2006 novel, ‘The African Origins of UFOs’ a book where experimental elements of afrofuturism, metafiction, science fiction, surrealism, mythology are rewritten in Anthony’s innovative language.
Look out for Volume 2 also coming in 2025.

grands artistes tels que Wax Tailor, Eric Legnini, Chassol, Nils Landgren, Angélique Kidjo,
Laurent Coulondre, Dominique A, ASM, Cut Killer, Catherine Ringer, Christian Escoudé, ...
Impliquée dans de multiples projets et collaborations, cette musicienne hyperactive alterne
les albums electro jazz, hip hop ou encore jazz funk entre ses deux formations principales,
Antiloops et Outlaws.
En 2024, Ludivine Issambourg donne une suite très attendue à l'album Outlaws, qui était
paru en 2020, avec lequel elle a rencontré un véritable succès critique et public, recevant
notamment les félicitations du légendaire flûtiste américain « Hubert Laws » en personne,
dont elle revisitait l'oeuvre jazz funk.
A l'époque, elle avait convaincu Eric Legnini d’être le directeur musical de l’album «
Outlaws », s'entourant pour l’occasion des meilleurs musiciens de la scène jazz française
(Laurent Coulondre, Stéphane Huchard, Julien Herné) avec le soutien du label Heavenly
Sweetness.
Grâce au succès de ce premier album et à la suite d'un voyage à New York, Ludivine a
souhaité poursuivre son hommage et l'élargir à d’autres de ses grandes inspirations : Gil
Scott Heron, & Brian Jackson, Nils Landgren, mais aussi d'autres flûtistes qui l'ont
beaucoup influencée comme Jeremy Steig, Bobbi Humphrey et Dave Valentine.
Ludivine poursuit ainsi l'aventure « OUTLAWS » en livrant un deuxième album intitulé
« ABOVE THE LAWS » sous la bannière du label Heavenly Sweetness. Ce nouvel opus
proposera cette fois-ci des compositions originales de Ludivine, empreintes de la tradition
jazz funk 70's du label CTI, tout en intégrant quelques reprises soigneusement choisies.
Elle réunit pour l'occasion une équipe de réalisateurs exceptionnels comme Eric Legnini,

Ainsi, le producteur vétéran suisse Alex Attias (Vision, Compost Records) transforme ce track original jazz en des tonalités housy avec ce qu’il faut de couleur brésilienne. En version Dub, DJ Deep et Romain Poncet, présents également dans le 1er EP proposé, donnent à cette musique une nouvelle envergure plus sombre. La moiteur de la forêt tropicale, l’hostilité de la mangrove ne lui convenaient finalement pas. Alors, il a quitté son environnement naturel pour la quiétude d’un plan d’eau douce. Sans besoin perpétuel de batailler pour affirmer son territoire, le Tigre a trouvé là l’endroit idéal pour ses récits instrumentaux. Pour raconter ces voyages qui l’ont fait passer de l’Asie à l’Afrique, des salons soul-jazz aux rues asphaltées du hip hop, et qui ont transformé ses rayures en portées où se sont inscrites des gammes Thaïlandaises et des arrangements ethio-jazz.
Ces périples, le félin les raconte en quatuor, les pas du superprédateur inspirés par le saxophone ténor de Laurent Bardainne, leader dresseur dans l’instrument duquel se reflètent les grandes figures du free jazz. Sans éclaboussures, basse et batterie dessinent à la surface de l’eau des cercles concentriques, autant de réactions au groove, quand l’orgue Hammond souffle au-dessus de l’onde comme le porteur des déplacements mélodiques et solistes. Le regard fixé dans une esthétique analogique et live, Laurent Bardainne et Tigre D’Eau Douce gravent à coups de griffes trois premiers morceaux sur le label Heavenly Sweetness.

DAVID WALTERS - MAMA EP
Before an upcoming album in 2020 on Heavenly Sweetness Records, Mama is the first single. A track in which the balafon’s woody resonance, the meditative flute and the female choruses return to the Creole roots of David, recall the memory of his Caribbean grandfather exiled to New York but, above all, a title dedicated to his grandmother, who after the last soaring electro-disco, she comes to declaim the text on the ultimate measures.
David Walters will have thought of it, conceived and realized in close collaboration with Patchworks.
Then, in the wake of the single Mama released in the month of each of them took the title, isolated himself in the studio with instruments and machines to come out only with a total reinterpretation, but especially personal, of the title.
Hammering bass drum and snare drum bursts, David has entrusted the direction of operations to the rhythmic, and it is one after the other that digital elements were invited to transform the original maternal softness into a boiling west indies soundsystem. Synths their strings on the hum of the bass, the hypnotic power of the riddim remains.
Two remixes, two atmospheres.
Patchworks scene is set in a jazz-funk setting, an heritage from Roy Ayers and Lonnie Liston Smith. Powerful drum, enrobing bass, the Fender Rhodes becomes a soloist, motivated by this irrepressible groove. And that the meshes leave the hands of the balafon player to pass in those of the vibraphonist.

Chanteur, percussioniste, militant, Erick a oeuvré pour défendre et répandre les rythmes et la tradition Gwo ka aux Antilles mais aussi en métropole. Son oeuvre est désormais redécouverte par de nombreux mélomanes à travers le monde.
Une voix forte, âpre, charnue, avec le timbre caractéristique des formes créoles de musique conviviale de plein air. Erick Cosaque a la voix faite pour passer par-dessus les deux tambours boula et le tambour makè qui sont en général associés, avec quelques percussions légères, dans le gwo ka de la Guadeloupe. Kout’ tanbou informel à un coin de rue, veillée traditionnelle chez un particulier, léwoz sonorisé dans une salle associative, c’est une voix à la fois chaleureuse et impérieuse que les Antillais des îles et de métropole ont aussi appris à connaître par le disque, la radio et la télévision, en plus de quarante-cinq ans d’activité professionnelle – une vingtaine d’albums personnels, une quarantaine de participations et collaborations avec des artistes de toutes les esthétiques et de toutes les générations de la musique caribéenne.

A strong, rough, plump voice with the typical tone heard in the creole outdoor musical gatherings. Whether heard at an informal street corner kout’ tanbou, during a traditional evening at someone’s place or in the musical léwoz of a community center, his warm yet imperial voice has been known by West Indians, in the islands and in the mainland through music, radio and television thanks to a career spanning more than forty five years – about twenty solo albums, forty or so participations and collaborations with artists of all generations and genres within the Caribbean music scene.

‘Caribbean Roots’ represents a return to his roots for Anthony Joseph, who has always
remained true to a powerful, deep-seated sense of his Caribbean identity.
Having started out as a joint project with the outstanding percussionist Roger Raspail (Cesaria Evora,Papa Wemba, Kassav), ‘Caribbean Roots’ swiftly grew into a creative force incorporating the rhythms, sounds and vibes that rock the Caribbean from San Fernando, Scarborough,Kingston and Les Abymes to Port-au-Prince and Havana. Backed by a band made up of a blend of local musicians, the album attempts to unite the different islands into a single entity whilst ensuring that the identity of each is in no way diluted by the mix,instead creating a richer and stronger alloy.
The saxophones of Shabaka Hutchings (The Heliocentrics) and Jason Yarde, the trumpet of Yvon Guillard (Magma), the bass of Mike Clinton (Salif Keita) and the trombone of Pierre Chabrèle (Creole Jazz Orchestra) all combine to form a group of Caribbean All Stars to which Andy Narrell, the master of the steel pans, brings ringing drum beats.

Nous lançons une nouvelle série qui fait suite à la compilation "Kouté Jazz". Le 1er volume concerne la réédition de l'album d'Edmony Krater et Zepiss.
Edmony Krater a été élevé au son Gwo Ka, cette percussion traditionnelle des caraïbes. Il a joué avec de nombreux musiciens antillais mais aussi Bernard Lubat et Claude Nougaro.
C'est en 1988 qu'il enregistre "Tijan Pou Velo", un hommage aux musiciens des musiques "racines". Un album a part dans les musiques antillaises.

Following the success of volume 1, sold out at the record store day 2017, we decided with Francis Falceto to give a follow up to this boxset of Ethiopian singles. Francis plunged into his impressive collection of Ethiopian records to bring out colorful pearls. There are great names of the golden age of Ethiopian music such as Mahmoud Ahmed, Alemayéhu Eshété, Ali Mohamed Birra but also less known artists to be rediscovered as Muluquen Meléssé, Alayew Mesfin or Seyoum Gebreyes.
This box is a tribute to the Ethiopian music producer Ali Tango, who produced most of these EP's!!

After releasing around fifty 45 rpm singles and his first 33 rpm album (Ethiopian Modern Instrumental Hits AELP 10, re-released by Heavenly Sweetness HL092VL), Amha Esthèté set about compiling his best 45s on a series of now legendary albums (the originals are impossible to find) in 1972.
An audacious, funky outlaw, a music lover and an entrepreneur in tune with the baby-boomer generation, young Amha Esthèté (he was only twenty-four when he launched his label) will be remembered as the instigator of a peaceful revolution thick with soul and rock’n’roll.
The tracks on this first volume celebrate pioneers of modern Ethiopian groove such as Girma Bèyènè, Seyfu Yohannes, Tèshomè Meteku, Menelik Wèsnatchèw, Mulatu Astatq and Muluken Melesse, alongside Dztradi-moderndzsingers representing Amhara (Essatu Tèssèmma) and Oromo culture, so rich and so long marginalised (Abbèbè Tèssèmma and Gèmètchu Itana).

A lost treasure recorded by an American pianist in Belgium in the 70's.A record that precious little known about, but it's a truly great one! Phil Raphael is a born New Yorker, but this set was made while he was living Belgium and it features a group of players from the Brussels scene, including Johnny Peret on vibes, bells and bongo (and he gets a lot of space to shine in the set), bassis Paul Dubois, drummer Robert Pernet and vocalist Rose Thompson. The music is the right kind of unclassifably cool, with a jazziness that goes back to bebop plus airy, kind of psyche jazz informed movements, and some evocative kind of dramatic bits, courtesy Thompson's worldless vocals. Includes a pair of pretty long pieces in "Archangelo" and "Dead Sea Scrolls", plus the shorter (but still between 6 and 10 minutes) numbers "Hommage A Kabylie" and "Night Crawler". Wicked work by pianist Horace Parlan -- and one of his most stunning Blue Note sessions ever!
The album was first recorded in 1963, but then kept on the shelf for years -- seeing only brief release as part of a Booker Ervin package in the late 70s, and finally coming out with the proper cover and lineup at some point in the 80s!
Why Blue Note waited so long is a mystery, because the album's a gem throughout -- almost more important, and more starkly modern than any of Parlan's other work for the label.
Booker Ervin leads the frontline on tenor, alongside Johnny Coles on trumpet, Grant Green on guitar, and the rhythm section of Butch Warren and Billy Higgins. Parlan's choice of material is fantastic -- with a number of Africanist tracks that feature unique rhythmic patterns that really push the soloists! Titles include "A Tune For Richard", "Dexi", "Home Is Africa", "Kucheza Blues", and "Back From The Gig".

Although Art Taylor was one of the busiest modern second-generation jazz drummers, working in the studio with Coleman Hawkins, Donald Byrd, John Coltrane and many others, he only released five albums under his own name, of which A.T.'s Delight was the third. And a delight it is indeed, bright and percussive, and when conga player Carlos "Patato" Valdes joins Taylor and pianist Wynton Kelly and bassist Paul Chambers on three cuts (Thelonious Monk's "Epistrophy," "Move" and a Taylor calypso-inflected original called "Cookoo and Fungi"), the rhythm pocket opens into a deep blue sea for the horn men (Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax and Dave Burns on trumpet). "Move" does exactly that, it moves, and at a blistering pace. Monk's "Epistrophy," thanks in part to Valdes, reveals its rumba roots, and has never sounded brighter. The seldom-covered Coltrane composition "Syeeda's Song Flute" seems likewise refreshed and revived. The lone Taylor original, the driving "Cookoo and Fungi," is as sharp and alert is a kitten waking from a nap in the spring sun, and Taylor's drum solo is crisp, efficient and slides seamlessly into the calypso-informed main theme. Kenny Dorham's Matador can safely claim the all too common distinction of being a classic among jazz connoisseurs while virtually unknown to the casual listener. Dorham is joined here by Jackie McLean, Bobby Timmons, Teddy Smith, and J.C. Moses, all of whom deliver outstanding performances. More than anything, this session is perhaps best known for including a stunning version of McLean's composition "Melody for Melonae," used less than a month earlier on his groundbreaking Blue Note LP Let Freedom Ring. For this session, though, the tune is renamed "Melanie" and, if not better, this version at least rivals the take under McLean's leadership. For starters, the addition of another horn adds some tonal depth to the proceedings, a situation arguably lacking in the tune's earlier recording. Also of note is what has to be Bobby Timmons' most intense moment on record. One rarely has the opportunity to hear Timmons dig and scrape as hard as he does during this solo, and his barely audible vocal accompaniment (à la Bud Powell) only helps to prove this point. This is a case where a performer not commonly associated with seriously stretching out goes at it with a life-affirming fervor, making "Melanie" a treat for listeners who revel in emotional performances. Other highlights include the opener, "El Matador," a 5/4 number that, frankly, fades out just when things were getting good, and the otherwise unaccompanied Dorham/Timmons duet, "Prelude." A fantastic session by any standard.

Le jeux d’Henderson est rude et fougueux, ce qui colle parfaitement à ses compositions mais aussi à celles de Dorham. Et le titre de l’album est plus qu’un avertissement, cet album ne fera que sortir et revenir sur votre platine!

Rarely are such "meeting of the minds" sessions worth any fuss at all – but in this case, the masterful talents of the players turn what should be a snoozy "common denominator" session into a modernist classic that still crackles with excitement after all these years! The real success factor here is Ellington, who was hitting a point in his career when he was really beginning to experiment again – as you'll hear in the beautifully angular piano lines that he lays next to Mingus' bass and Roach's lively drums. The set's nearly all originals, and titles include "Money Jungle", "Le Fleurs Africaines", and "Wig Wise". Very nice!

« Now! » is one of Bobby Hutcherson's most adventurous recordings. Cut with the Harold Land Quintet in 1969, Hutcherson augments the lineup with vocalist the Right Reverend Eugene McDaniels (then Gene McDaniels) and a chorus at the height of Black Power consciousness. While this band may not appeal to straight hard and post-bop listeners who prefer their music instrumentally, it is a compelling and even stunning record if accepted on its own terms. The compositions reflect the tightrope Hutcherson and Land walked on their earlier outings together between post-bop and vanguard jazz The interplay between Hutcherson and Stanley Cowell's 's piano in the instrumental passages in "Slow Change" is so intuitive and symbiotic it may slip by the listener who is not paying attention. Land's solo too, comes out for the post-Coltrane ethos and fills the vocal lines powerfully and convincingly. Elsewhere, on "Hello to the Wind," written by drummer Joe Chambers and McDaniels, the influence of Terry Callier is evident in the tune's dynamic and melody line that is led by Wally Richardson's guitar. With fine piano work by Kenny Barron and a fluid, modal bassline by Herbie Lewis. McDaniels' voice is in fine form here, his husky baritone effortlessly coloring the mix. The title cut is a short lullaby written by Hutcherson and McDaniels, tender, simple and haunting as Land's saxophone winds through the shouts of female voices with restraint and elegance. The utter creative vision of Herbie Lewis' "The Creators" showcases the band at the height of its powers with Cowell holding the piano chair with killer Latin rhythms, psychedelic electric guitar and a provocative engagement between Land, Hutcherson and the chorus. The original set ends with "Black Heroes" by Land. A scatted, syncopated piece of counterculture beat jazz, it offers a better portrait of the band than it does of McDaniels or the choral group. A hard bop piece with a striated and knotty vocal intro and finish, it is a fitting and exciting final track. (courtesy of Thom Jurek, All Music Guide)

A rare and beautiful Andrew Hill session, and one of the classic Blue Note entries into the "jazz and voices" sound that the label pioneered with Donald Byrd and Eddie Gale. Hill leads a core jazz group that includes Woody Shaw, Carlos Garnett, Richard Davis, and Freddie Waits -- and the group is backed by a vocal ensemble with a very spiritual vibe. The sound is a lot more hip than the Donald Byrd & Voices albums, and the playing of the core jazz group is very very soulful -- along the lines of Hill's Grass Roots album, which was also from the same period. The record's similar to the Max Roach/Billy Harper vocal work around the same time, and titles include "Ghetto Lights", "Hey Hey", "Two Lullabies", and "Love Chant".
